It's probably crashing Windows, and the computer is automatically restarting to recover. Apparently, your capture card is not the same one that was mentioned on page 3 of that thread after all. The correct driver for the remote must be on the installation CD somewhere, even if it's not installed by default.

It's software. I just went to run it on my mother's laptop... the installation was messed up... It said, it couldn't find certain DLL or DL_ files for installation, when it was looking at the exact right folder they were in.. then i ran the patch, and afterwards, it said the printer drivers weren't installed right. none the less, i tried the scanner, and it worked. so it isn't the printer...

I'm not sure why the webcam would work when the scanner doesn't. Is the Windows Image Acquisition service set to Manual? Is there anything related to scanners in the Event Log?

Hmm. Well.. I haven't found it myself, so I guess I should just list the files on the CD?

WIA is set to Automatic and is Started. and well... there's aLOT in the Event Log.. exactly what should i look for? an error? there's a TON of those.. Volume Shadow Copy Service and COM+ event service seem to repeat in pairs at the exact same time, often.

My computer hasn't randomly slowed down yet for me to check up on it with Processes Explorer

There are more drivers that are compatible with your TV tuner here and here. I can't guarantee that either one has the correct remote drivers since I can't install them to find out, but the chipsets are the same and the filenames match the ones on your CD. The main problem is that there are at least 15 different manufacturers that use the Philips SAA7130 chip, and my guess is that only one of those companies has a set of drivers that will work with your remote.

Look for any errors or warnings that mention Lexmark, TWAIN, or Image Acquisition. Also, try going to this site and downloading the "SCANNER, Digital Camera Code" application. Extract all the files to the same directory and run ScanIt.exe. Click the Select Scanner button. Do you see your scanner listed? What happens when you try to scan an image? What is listed after "TWAIN Services" when you click the Version button?

I get 'site not found' for the first site. For the second, there were two TV cards on the list, w/FM support and w/out. Mine doesn't have an FM antenna plug, so i tried the other first, but it's files didn't work (just like how the original driver files on my CD didn't work, I get no tv signal when I use them). Next, I tried the w/FM drivers, and I noticed that those shared a number of files with the Lifeview Drv._3.25 thing from the other forum, which DID at least make me able to view TV. so I tried that alone. It didn't have a setup file, so i tried Add New Hardware, I didn't get anywhere. I copied the Setup file from the Drv._3.25, and it installed the files, but it still didn't work. So i started mixing the files together into one folder, and installed, and I can again watch tv, but no remote, so I assume nothing from the downloads on the 2nd page you gave have done anything.

The listed sources are: Creative Webcam NX Pro 1.0 (32-32), Lexmark X74-X75 1.603 (32-32), and WIA-Lexmark X74-X75 1.0 (32-32).

If I select ANY of these, and go to "scan image" it says 'Scan has been aborted'. if I select the webcam and go to Scan to Clipboard, it brings up a capture tool for the webcam. Selecting Lexmark brings up the Lexmark scanning tool, which comes up with the same error as before, and selecting WIA-Lexmark brings up the Microsoft scanning tool, which still cannot scan.

TWAIN services are listed as 'Available' when clicking the Version button.

The first site still works for me, so maybe you could try again at a different time of the day. In the meantime, here is one more manufacturer that has drivers for your card. Download the ones for the ITV-300 SAA7130. There also appears to be a separate installer for the remote driver in the Utility folder, so you may need to install that separately. This one seems like the best candidate for the correct driver so far, so if it doesn't work, there may be a problem with the remote itself or with the sensor (especially if the remote driver still crashes your computer).

It looks like there are two sets of drivers for your scanner, one using TWAIN and the other using WIA. Try uninstalling the drivers and using the Uninstall Clean utility again, but don't reset yet. Instead, run ScanIt.exe again and see what scanners are listed there.

EDIT: I've tried installing the newer drivers right out, and uninstalling everything and then installing them. Neither allows for me to use the card, I just can't see anything with it. However, if I uninstall and then use the Drv._3.25 one, then I can again use the card. I tried using the said working drivers with the remote control applet from the new link you listed, and while it installs, and even runs in the background, it still does not work with the remote.

Did that, the only thing listed is the Webcam.

And here's an odd thing... Remember a time ago when I said I had a PS2 adaptor for the computer, that would randomly turn on and off? I at the time thought this to be a hardware problem. But today, I tried SLAX out off a Live CD, and on a whim attempted the adaptor.. it worked perfectly. It loaded up as soon as I plugged it in. oddly, my USB flash drive did NOT work ^^;;; but I just thought I should say, it isn't a hardware problem, but likely some kind of Windows/Driver problem.

My problem is not a dire one by any definition, but I am driven crazy by it, regardless.

One day, I came home to my compy to find that the task bar had been changed, and the quick launch buttons were all in disarray. To my horror, the desktop button (the one you click to minimize all the windows) was gone! I rely on that button so much that its absence is driving me mad. Crying

This happened to me once before, and somehow, I managed to find that button again. But now, I can't remember what to do! I know this seems like a trifiling problem, but I would deeply appreciate any help. Smile

i've asked for help so many times here that i think i should try and return the favor.

while i can't really tell you what caused your quicklaunch buttons to get all messed up, in general it SHOULD be easy to fix it.

1) if you have a little set of arrows next to your quicklaunch, you can click on that a menu of extra items will appear. by left-clicking and holding the mouse button down, you can change the order of the appearance of the icons on that menu or your taskbar icons.

2) if you unlock the taskbar, there should like a dotted line next to the quicklaunch. you can drag that to extend it out, and in the same as before, click to move icons around. you can then drag it back and lock the taskbar again.

if you are still confused, or still can't find the right icons, you can check ALL your quick launch icons by following the folder process of

C:\Documents and Settings\YOURUSERNAME\Application Data\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Quick Launch

from here, you should see all your quicklaunch icons in a folder, including Show Desktop. if you have extra shortcuts you don't need, just delete them. then try the taskbar drag from 2) one more time, and try moving the icons around. i think that should get your Show Desktop back.

as an extra note, using the Windowkey + M will have the same result as the Show Desktop button Big Grin

Oops, I didn't see your edit until now. Hmm, I'm pretty much out of advice as far as the remote goes, since none of the compatible drivers I could find seem to work. I assume that it is faulty hardware, since it seems to be completely unresponsive. Unless you have another computer that you could test it on, I would suggest looking for a standalone USB remote such as this one.

When installing the drivers, are you given a choice between TWAIN and WIA, or are both installed automatically?

No choice, the installer would just go through the whole thing without a question.

I just did a registry search, I'm not sure if it's relavent but I found a ton of lingering Lexmark stuff, so I went and removed all I could find.

Oh. problem a friend and I have had. i'm on trillian, he's on iChat. we used to before be able to have webcam chats, and then one day we couldn't. neither of us had knowingly changed any setting (and this would be unrelated to the tv tuner, it happened weeks before). i haven't tried reinstalling trillian, which i can do, i've just put off, i'm just wondering if there is anything that can sort of explain the problem. it's not hardware, as i can select more than one signal, or even video files to transmit, and none of that works.

If that doesn't fix it, check the wiadebug.log file in your Windows directory. Are there any error messages there? If the file doesn't exist, try changing the appropriate registry value as described in this article. BTW, according to this, WIA drivers always install a TWAIN compatibility layer, so despite what I originally thought, there's nothing unusual about seeing your scanner listed twice.

Can you see his webcam, or can neither of you see each other's cams? Also, does the webcam work in other programs besides Trillian?

It looks like it is trying to read a value from the registry that isn't there. Download Regmon, then temporarily shut down all other programs (including virus scanners, etc.) and run it while trying to scan something. See if anything shows up under "sti_ci.dll," and if so, find out which registry key it is trying to access.

Try uninstalling Trillian and installing the latest version. Unfortunately, it looks like this is a common problem, so there are most likely bugs in the software that need to be fixed. If the newest version doesn't work, maybe an older version would work better?

There was no results for "sti_ci.dll" so I decided to search for "*.dll"

There was a nice list of errors. It was too long to fit in a post, so I've attached the log file.

I'm almost glad, I got worried when you wanted to use RegMon after I had deleted a bunch of Registry stuff but I can see that none of the things I deleted were even searched for here.
Also, kind of funny how basically everything having to do with "image file execution options" is missing.

9/12 edit: i have aquired a crappy computer! bought it for $10, thought maybe i can make a few dollars profit by selling the parts. it's 1995.. looking inside, i got really confused, every card in there is REALLY long, looks like it's stuck in pci and agp slots at the same time.. or something. if i took pictures of the parts, do you think you would be able to identify what kind of connection it had w/the motherboard? or if it'd be compatible w/mine. there's the board itself (w/a Win95 AMD processor), sound card, graphics card, a parallel/serial port card, and 8 MB ram sticks...

Unfortunately, the Image Execution Options deal with debugging rather than scanning (despite the name). You may need to try using RegMon again, because it looks like it won't show up under that DLL name after all. To help narrow down the results, try turning off Capture Events immediately after scanning, then see if there is any Lexmark-related software listed with NOT FOUND as its result. If all else fails, you may need to back up and do a repair installation of Windows, then reapply any service packs if necessary.

It sounds like those are VLB cards, which is a somewhat rare connection type that extends ISA and is used mostly with 486 processors (which means your processor is probably one of these). VLB was quickly made obsolete by PCI, so those cards would not work with your current PC (although the old computer probably has some regular ISA cards which might work depending on how old your current computer is).

All right, ran it again, there WERE lexmark program problems. I made sure to get EVERYTHING from the one click of the scan button.. there ended up being 20305 things on the list, which kind of freaked me out. The list is huge... 2.5 megs huge, so I need to upload it someplace to be able to get the whole thing out. here's one line for a lexmark program that appeared, as a kinda example
code:
1:
18	0.87855577	lxbbaiox.exe:3420	QueryValue	HKLM\SOFTWARE\LEXMARK\GUILOG	NOT FOUND

Since the Lexmark has worked as a scanner on another computer, do you think it's safe to copy whatever registry entries are missing from this one and install them here? Or would they be oriented to that specific machine only, and incompatible with another computer?

*looks up online* yep, matches up. this current computer is 4 years old, so i really doubt there's any compatibility with the 95. it's got PCI and an AGP that my graphics card is sitting in. so now, all i have to do is hope there are some antique collectors out there who want some parts that MIGHT work.

If the drivers are installed to the same directories and the other computer is running WinXP or Win2000, there shouldn't be any problems with copying over the entries from HKLM\SOFTWARE and HKCU (just be careful to avoid anything under HKLM\SYSTEM). Be sure to back up anything in the registry that will be overwritten in case anything goes wrong (although I doubt it since it isn't working right now anyway).

If you add a cheap hard drive (400-500MB should be fine) and any other missing parts that aren't too expensive, you may be able to sell the entire PC if it is in working order. Even though it's old, someone may be able to use it as a firewall, print server, or something similar.

eh.. that's probably a no-go. well, not entirely. i just had, when i got the computer, tried booting it up, and when it couldn't boot up completely, i shut it off, and just tore the thing apart. nothing is damaged (as far as i know) but every wire is disconnected, every cord pulled out. the motherboard isn't quite as obvious as the ones nowadays in showing where to plug in the power and IDE cords and whatever. it's possible to reassemble it, but that'd take some time. and i thought it might sell more as individual pieces anyway, tho i'm not sure.

EDIT: Got bored today, went at putting it together. Once i figured out the IDE (it came OFF of the card with the parallel and serial ports) i was able to reassemble to the minimum of booting up. Unfortunately, the BIOS won't boot anything right now, because there is no keyboard. The plug for the keyboard is very large, like an PS/2 on steroids. I suspect I either need to get an older keyboard or an adaptor plug. Otherwise, the computer just keeps freezing, asking me to hit F1 to continue boot where I cannot hit any key at all.

To make it anything useful for a network, I'd need ethernet, right? It only has a modem, and I'm not even sure what speed that is, so I would have to get an older ethernet card? What about increasing speed? The RAM is very small

I'm guessing this is a no, but if I were to get like a Pentium 1 or 2 processor, would that be compatible? I'm just trying to think what will make this computer most appealing if I sell it as a whole.

i have yet to try copying over any programs or registry entries to the computer with the scanner problem, i'll probably do that tomorrow.

If the computer doesn't work after being put together, that would be your best bet. Since VLB cards are somewhat rare, you may be able to get a decent amount of money for them if you can find someone who needs them.

That's an AT connector. There are PS/2 to AT adaptors available, or you could get an old keyboard like you mentioned.

Yes, you should probably look into getting an ISA ethernet card. You can even replace the modem with that, since it's probably lower than 56K and wouldn't be too useful.

What about increasing speed? The RAM is very small

Sure, you could either buy some additional RAM if there are any extra slots or replace the existing RAM. You may want to look up some additional info about the computer first to see what is compatible and how much the motherboard can hold, though.

I'm guessing this is a no, but if I were to get like a Pentium 1 or 2 processor, would that be compatible? I'm just trying to think what will make this computer most appealing if I sell it as a whole.

Unfortunately, the best you could do there is upgrade to a faster 486.

All right, I did some registry searching. For like, everything.

I found a few differences... Computer A will be the computer where the scanner doesn't work, B will the the one that does.

In SOFTWARE under local machine, there were a few values that B had that A did not in some keys. I copied those over, I cannot remember all of them.

A had at one point a value of "oem11.inf" in one key, when B had a value of "oem25.inf" when searching through SOFTWARE in Local Machine

I decided to look under SYSTEM, just for kicks. Computer A is complety missing a value Computer B has in a Key on both computers that has information about scanning. the value is "ActiveService"="usbscan" I tried creating a new key on A, but would get an error that this registry file cannot be modified. i assume because whatever key is in use, or something.

i have not yet rebooted the computer, but i've logged off my name and logged back on, which 99% seems to produce the same results (though i can understand in this case if it doesn't) and there has been no change in the scanner.

I've found PS/2 > AT adaptors, now that I know what they're called, so I'll probably just buy a cheap one in the near future to finally get that computer going, and see how well it runs.
