First of all, try pinging 66.94.234.13, which is one of Yahoo's IP addresses. If that works, it's a problem with DNS rather than with the connection, and you will need to contact your ISP about it. If not, you will need to test her modem to see whether or not it is causing the problem.

If your modem is also a dialup modem, try uninstalling the modem from her computer and temporarily using your modem in it instead. If it works, there is a problem with her modem and it most likely needs to be replaced (unless the manufacturer has updated drivers that you can try). If not, the problem is most likely with the operating system or some sort of hardware conflict. Check the Device Manager under Control Panel > System and see if there are any warnings. If not, you may need to back up any important files and reinstall Windows.

Thanks Krang! I tried the pinging number and found that I got a response so I called the company today and the first guy gave me specific addresses to put in, but that didn't work. I spent a good time with the second guy. He told me that it seems that something is blocking me from getting online completely so I should run Spybot and such. Now I have to figure out what the heck she did with the disk because he had me uninstall the dial-up program (or something like it) and reinstall but I need the disk.

UGH. She really has the worst luck with her home PCs.

The log looks clean for the most part, but there are a few (harmless) entries left over from spyware and program uninstallations that should be cleaned up. Run HijackThis again, and when it displays the results, check the boxes next to these items:

It sounds like the IDE cable is loose. If you have experience in working with computer hardware, turn the computer off, open the case, and make sure that the two flat grey cables are securely attached to both the motherboard and the drives themselves.

Yeah, that's most likely what went wrong. If you have a spare IDE cable, try replacing it and seeing if it works. You could also try temporarily moving one of the drives to the same cable as the hard drive to make sure that there's nothing wrong with the drives, but you may need to adjust some jumpers first.

This is gonna sound stupid... I installed a flash program, and all of my picture files were set by default to open with it. I like them opening with Windows Picture and Fax Viewer when I double click, so I would right click on them, go to Properties, and from there chose a new program for it to open with.

Then, double clicking on them cause them not to open at all. Right clicking and going to the Pic/Fax Viewer did nothing, while going to Flash or Paint still worked.

I went to filetypes, and made sure GIF, JPEG, and BMP were all set to open w/the Picture/Fax Viewer by default, and tried again.

They still do nothing when I double click, but now if I right click and Open With the Viewer, they are able to open again.

What should I modify to make all of my picture files open automatically with Picture/Fax Viewer on a double click?

While I'm here... a file keeps appearing on my recently used programs list: DOSBOX.conf. I have DOSBox but haven't used it in months. I suppose it's starting with the computer or something? It's not really important but no matter how many times I remove it from that list, it reappears, and it's annoying. Quick fix to get rid of it?

One last question, heh... can I password protect folders? I know I can make them private from other Users, but can I take that one step further?

Under File Types, highlight the extension you want to change and click Advanced. Find the entry that corresponds to opening the file with Picture/Fax Viewer, highlight it, and click Set Default. If that doesn't work, highlight "open," click Edit, and set the application to this:

Make sure that the path to Windows is correct. Also, be sure "Use DDE" is checked. Set Application to shimgvw and Topic to System.

Do you mean the Recent Documents list or a different one? Either way, you can find out if DOSBox is loading at startup by going to Start > Run and typing msconfig. From there, go to the Startup tab and look for an entry that starts DOSBox. If there is one, uncheck it to prevent it from starting.

Windows itself can't do that, so you'll need an external utility. You could also add the files to a ZIP or RAR archive and set a password on that, or you could use Windows' permissions settings to deny access to other users.

Ah... I didn't have Topic set to System. That fixed it.

Recent applications, from the list that appears when one first opens the XP Start Menu. DOSBox isn't listed in msconfig.

Actually, really, it wouldn't bother me if I could like redo my start menu. I like the design of the XP menu, but if there was a way to make it so the recent programs list wasn't there and the menu wasn't as wide, that'd be sweet. like, if instead of having two columns, there'd be one, that'd have My Documents, My Computer, Run, as well as All Programs. but i don't think that is possible. Here is a very crudely example of what I want done in Paint. It ain't pretty

That actually looks pretty similar to the Classic Start Menu, which is the one I always use (that's why I wasn't familiar with the Recent Applications list ). To use it, right-click the taskbar, select Properties, and on the Start Menu tab, choose Classic Start Menu. If you don't like the look of the classic menu, you can also customize the standard XP menu with the Customize button.

The only program I have been able to find so far is TraySaver, but I'm not sure whether or not that works with XP. As for docklets, I found this, but that may be the same one you already have.

The log looks clean except for two entries. The first one looks like it has already been deleted, but it would still be best to clean it up by removing its entry:

For the second one, you'll need to use SmitRem to remove it, since it will keep coming back otherwise. Afterward, make sure its entry is gone:

My best guess as to what is causing the problem is spyware attempting to redirect GMail to another site, since IE is particularly prone to hijacking (and the block list also sounds like something spyware would do). The bookmarks and homepages being shared between IE and Avant is due to the fact that they use the same rendering engine, so unfortunately, spyware would work the same way. To fix it, try using the software linked to in the first post in this thread. If that doesn't get rid of it, try running HijackThis and posting the log.

As for browsers, my personal favorite is SeaMonkey. It is based on the same core as Firefox, though, so it may or may not work on your computer. Another good browser you could try is Opera, which is completely separate from both IE and Firefox.

That docklet actually had a link to a new version. It worked right for a day and not today, so I suspect that it has to do with the icons i have hidden and not hidden on my taskbar.

I just installed Winamp yesterday. I was copying around some plugins and installing some trying to make it work better. One thing didn't work, and on another I made a mistake.
I installed a Hebrew language pack, but it permanantly changed some of the picture files in the Menu folder for Winamp Modern. I don't know how to get it back to english w/out a reinstall, unless someone has Winamp and is willing to send me that picture file.

Also, I want to play realmedia and quicktime on winamp.. i already have Media Player Classic and Real/Quicktime Alternative, so I thought if I just copy the plugin DLLs over, it'd work... Not quite. Any idea on how to make it work?

Tera's Real Audio Input plugin [For Real Media]
Nullsoft Quicktime Plugin [For Quicktime]
PowerPlayer II Plugin [For both media formats]

Note that these plugins may not work as expected, so proceed with caution.

I uploaded my copy of the Winamp Modern theme here. Extract it to your Skins directory (overwriting all files in the process) and it should correct the problem.

Here's something odd.


I've found that within the past week, I've been finding folders named "Cookies", "History" and "Temporary Internet Files" in my Temp folder. These all have IE files in them.

Now this might not sound odd, but I don't use IE. Even on rare occurancies that I need to, I can delete the folders and that's the end of it.

This isn't the case here, I haven't used IE before or during the time these folders started appearing, and deleting them doesn't work, they keep coming back. Also I find that when I try to delete them at times, I can't because they are in use (by what I haven't the foggiest).


I really can't think of any program I've installed recently that would have made this happen.

Last Saturday, my computer crashed.

I was working on a document and left it for a while. When I came back to the computer, I noticed that it froze up and I decided to reboot it. Then came the "blue screen of death" saying that the Windows has detected a system error and needs to be restarted.

I restarted the computer but then it froze up again and had to restart it yet again and after a while, it took me to the startup menu and displayed this;
