Here's something else to try. First, reboot into Safe Mode. Then, go to Start > Run and enter this exactly, including the quotes:

"C:\Program Files\Lavasoft\Ad-Aware SE Personal\Ad-Aware.exe" +procnuke

This is assuming that Ad-Aware is installed in the default directory. If not, you'll need to alter the path above. When Ad-Aware starts, choose a full system scan, and hopefully it will complete the scan this time.

Is this normal? I keep getting the defalt windows wallpaper (The one with the hill and the blue sky) come up before the welcome screen when I boot up the computer. This has only recently startted happening. How do I fix it?

I'm not sure what would have caused that, but here's how to change it back. Start up Registry Editor by going to Start > Run and typing:

regedit

Then, navigate to HKEY_USERS\.DEFAULT\Control Panel\Desktop, and in the right pane, find "Wallpaper" and double-click it. For the value, enter:

(None)

and click OK. That should remove the wallpaper on the welcome screen and display the default blue background instead.
Green_Bird 05-07-2006 11:09 AM
Okay I found what it looks like! It's not really the defalt wallpaper, just something that looks like it...is it posable that it could have had been downloaded on the last windows update (the one that was completly screwy)? because it does look like something Microsoft would make.

http://img304.imageshack.us/img304/2041/whattheheck7aw.png

The path for it is:

C:\Documents and Settings\Default User\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\background1.bmp

But I don't know how it came to pop up right before the welcome screen....
Krang 05-08-2006 01:33 AM
That's strange, I'm not sure where that wallpaper came from, although the reason it is loading before the Welcome screen is that it seems to be set as the wallpaper for the default user (which normally doesn't have any wallpaper set). If the registry modification doesn't remove it, try moving the file to another directory so that Windows won't be able to load it.

i had already done things w/ msconfig, so i followed the list you had posted a link to for the services, and on this computer, it worked.

seeing no problem, i did so on my mom's computer.

it's either directly related to this, or a pure coincidence, but upon restarting my mom's computer, and every time since then that the computer has booted up, an error saying something along the lines of "NETWORKING DLL IS NOT REGISTERED" pops up.

possibly connected, i cannot access files on her computer shared on the network from this computer anymore. i get an error saying i don't have permission to access the files.

i assume, on one or both computers, i disabled an important service, or somehow, some DLL just got unregisted on my mom's computer, and it just needs to be registered again (but what dll...)
Krang 05-10-2006 10:25 PM
Yes, it does sound like both problems are related and have to do with services. Be sure that the Server and Workstation services are set to Automatic, and if the computer is connected to the Internet, the DHCP Client and DNS Client services should also be Automatic. Also, be sure that the following services are not Disabled (Manual would probably be best for these, but Automatic would work also):

Application Layer Gateway Service
Net Logon
Network Connections
Network Location Awareness
Remote Access Connection Manager
Telephony
Terminal Services

If that doesn't work, try copying your services configuration from the working computer to the other one by going through each service and making sure it is set to the same value on each computer. Also, is the DLL name mentioned in the error message?

Nah, it's not, otherwise I would have tried reregistering it.

It's late for me right now, so I'll try that when I get the chance, might not be able to for a few days.

EDIT: Ha, free time right away.

Terminal Services was disabled, so I set it to manual and started up, and then restarted the computer. But the error still came up on a reboot, so I'm going to try and equate the settings between the computers.

It would seem as if my memories being eatten up by AOL....I don't have AOL....I didn't even have a free trial version of it. But for some reason it's taking up 2,072 KB. Not alot, But I need all the memory I can get because I'm trying to rule out memory problems as the cause of all the other problems I had. So basicly is it okay just to uninstall AOL through add/remove programs?

I also deleted Motive smartbridge through Hijack this...was that okay?

And one last question, is it okay to take out C:\DOCUME~1\Owner\LOCALS~1\Temp\200641884728_mcinfo.exe with through hijack this? Because I don't have Mcafee anymore, I uninstalled that a long time ago, and it seems to be related to mcafee....

As long as you don't use AOL to connect to the Internet, it's completely safe (and recommended) to remove it.

Yes, since it seems pretty much useless.

It looks like a leftover setup file, so yes, it is safe to remove.

I need some help with postnuke. If anyone is familiar with it please drop me a PM, as my issue is a little complex to deal with on this thread.

Thanks.

Hey,

So I was trying to watch this video through AOL's video player thing, and it said I needed to update my version of FireFox. So, I went to the link they provided, downloaded the package, and began installing it.

It all seems to be working fine, but when it gets to the very end (literally 99%-ish) it says there was an error when it came to installing the US English language pack, or something...I thought it might just be the American version, so I even tried installing the British English language pack, but I get the same thing:

I thought, no big deal...I'll just uninstall and start-over. But now I can't even uninstall FireFox, and worst of all I can't even access it at all now! When I try and open it, I get a really weird error message:

The whole thing seems to be corrupted, and I'm not sure what to do...so help would be appreciated. And yes, I could just use IE, but if someone knows how to fix this that would be great because I prefer FireFox. Thanks.
Travis Bickle 05-16-2006 01:02 PM
Post this in "the Comp/Tech Support Help Thread" and use it in IE?
Almasy 05-16-2006 01:04 PM
Oh, whoops...can someone move this to the computer help place? Thanks.

Use it in IE? What do you mean?
Travis Bickle 05-16-2006 01:17 PM
Essentially, the entire AOL megasite is made for Internet Explorer. Certain things on there are not accessible in Firefox (or weren't the last time I checked, which was about a year ago). It's best to use IE for that.
BigOFan 05-16-2006 01:42 PM
Actually theres an extension for Firefox called IE Tab, which lets you view pages in "IE" Formatting without actually using IE.

I have it installed and it works well.

I went through over the services again. The shared files now work correctly. But, the error still comes up on the computer.

the title of the error is Wireless Configuration

and it says,

Notification dll has not been registered, program will not work correctly.

maybe it's something in msconfig? or is there a way to see what dll's i have registered and find the missing one..

First, locate the profile directory on your hard drive. If you are using Windows NT/2000/XP, it should be in:

C:\Documents and Settings\[User Name]\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\

Application Data may be hidden, so you'll need to go to Tools > Folder Options > View and select "Show hidden files and folders" if that's the case. From there, you should find a folder with random characters and the word "default". Inside that folder, select the folder named "chrome" and rename it to something else (note that this will temporarily disable any extensions and themes you have installed). Now you should be able to start Firefox. If everything is working, it would probably be easiest to just download your extensions and themes again and reinstall them. If there are errors while starting Firefox, you can post them here.

Actually, it sounds like a problem with the drivers for your wireless device. Try downloading the latest drivers from the manufacturer's site and installing them.

The list of registered DLLs is stored in the registry under:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\SharedDLLs

Unfortunately I still got the same error (the second picture I posted)

I don't know if this will help clear up what might be going on, but some things I noticed is that when I go to "Start > All Programs > Mozilla Firefox" it's completely empty. Also, the FireFox icon on my desktop has disapeared, and when I try to remove FireFox through Add/Remove programs it won't let me. It's as if in trying to update my version of FireFox by installing a new version it's gotten stuck in between and now I can't access it at all.

It sounds like Firefox has been partially uninstalled during the upgrade, especially since the icons are missing. In order to install it again, you'll need to clean up the existing installation by deleting the program directory, which should be:

C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\

Once that is deleted, download Firefox again and install it to the same location as before. It should recognize your existing profile, so your settings, bookmarks, etc. will still be intact. Also, since this is most likely not a problem with the browser chrome, you can undo the previous change by deleting the new chrome folder and renaming the old one.
