Computer/Technical Help

Tickle Tickle 04-15-2006 10:50 AM
I'm having problems with the program Windows Movie Maker, whenever I start working on a video or go to save a video the program will close out. Is there any other program like it? Is there a way to fix this problem?

Thanks in Advance.
Asirt 04-15-2006 11:30 AM
Although I do not use Windows Movie Maker, I would look at this page and see if you problem covers that page.

There's VirtualDub, although it's not as userfriendly. You could also take a look at Avid FreeDV if you wish. Check first with that page and see if that solves the problem.

By the way, this thread could probably be in the "Computer/Techincal Help" thread, but that's just me.

Rule #1 -- WMM sucks
Rule #2 -- choose a different software

I prefer Video Edit Magic personally, though I'm sure there are tons others out there. You can get a 30 Day demo for free, but after that it's you have to pay for it. It's simple, user friendly, and gives you a range of file types to save your movies as (not just wmv). All the videos I've done were using Video Edit Magic, so I think it's pretty good. Cool

hmm... well i tried that, and it said my address was 70.226.23.211 so i went on another computer on the network, and tried that... failed to connect. so i added :8080 to the end (i had one webcam program running at the time and it said that was the port number), still nothing. i randomly tried ipchicken on the other computer, and got the exact same IP... so maybe that's the IP of our router? and 'Remote Port' is the computer? i'm not sure how to connect right, and i'm also not sure if ZoneAlarm Firewall will block the connection or not.

Thanks for you help guys. I'm downloading the Video Edit Magic to see how I like it. I'll look at your links too, Asirt.

You're right, I totally forgot about that thread. Could an admin or mod merge this? >_>;

WMM is a very unstable program that crashes randomly without saving your stuff, from what I hear.

But then again, I believe that using anything but Mac for music and movie editing is absurd. Those are the only things they're good for.

Yes, the IP that displays there is the IP of your router, which is also your public IP. If the port you're trying to connect to is 8080, you will need to go into your router's settings and forward port 8080 to the computer running the webcam software. If you have configured ZoneAlarm to allow the webcam software to run as a server, it won't block access to port 8080, so that's most likely your router that's blocking access.

BTW, the remote port on IP Chicken is just the port your computer is using to connect to the site, so it's not really important.

all right.. i had no clue what to do at first, but i messed around a bit and it's working! all i need to do now is find a way to make it simpiler to use for someone w/like no computer knowledge (find an easier webcam program) and i'll be all set, thanks for the help!

I was wondering if there was any way to save videos from sites like youtube to the hard drive? Or if there are any free screen capture programs availiable.

Your SOL and JWF on saving them, but the PrtSc key is a great screen capture program.

Actually, Print Screen doesn't capture REAL movie files (it does for the YouTube site, and I think Google Video, but that's it). If you try to watch a .AVI or .WMV file in a regular movie program, it doesn't capture the screen. It ends up really weird.

But BS PLAYER can be used for pretty much any video format and capture images from them, and here is a site on how to save YOUTUBE files to your hard drive. So there you have it.

I was uninstalling Battle Realms, since I don't play it anymore, and ZoneAlarm came up with a message that knlwrap.exe was attempting to record keystrokes and mouse movement. I googled it found this and this. Based upon that, I denied it, and am currently looking up where this file might be(found it in C:\Program Files\Common Files\InstallShield\engine\6\Intel 32).

While I haven't a clue if this was installed along with Battle Realms, I removed the file and the rest of files that were in the folder.

Was just curious if I did the right thing. I think I did.

a while back, I asked how to make menus that appear from icons in some way, and the answer i got that i've been using was, when you add folders to the Quick Launch, but keep the quick launch small, you can then easily use them as menus. i've been doing that and it works well.

i'm hoping now to eliminate my start menu, if i can, because i'm getting into ObjectDock. so i want a docklet that can display my menus.

So far, I found one docklit on WinCustomize.org that almost does the trick, called KkMenu. I've been messing around w/it, and i'm starting to make it appear as it should, but none of the program shortcuts do anything. odds are, i'm not working w/the code right, or maybe it's not a great program.

so, i'm wondering if there is another docklit out there that can do this, or a way i can simulate it... a program that, when run, displays a menu, w/folders of my choice in it, where i can then browse around using my mouse, like any normal menu.

here is the link to the page i got Kkmenu from.

I think that's just a regular part of InstallShield, but it's better to play it safe anyway. As long as it uninstalled without any errors, denying it access won't cause a problem.

You may have other programs that will attempt to look for those files when they are uninstalled (which may cause an error), but if that happens, it can easily be solved by installing anything else that uses a recent version of InstallShield.

I'm not familiar with ObjectDock, but if it helps, you can right-click the taskbar and use the Toolbars menu to add new toolbars to it based on existing folders. You can also check Desktop to get a menu with all of your desktop icons and folders in it.

Sorry. I believe this is more of a rant than tech help.

I just installed Service Pack 2 on my laptop just before my desktop crapped out on me so I can go online. Now everytime I start up, it's slower than before I had SP 2. Also, it likes to tell me everytime that updates are available...even after I download them and install them. If I turn Automatic Update off, it has to remind me constantly that Automatic Update is turned off. Then it tells me that my anti-virus program isn't running right before it kicks in while my desktop loads up. Also, now my active desktop likes to crash a little more often.

SP 2 to me is like that little whiney brat you take into the grocery store. You just want to go in and pick up a carton of milk, but he wants you to buy him candy and Fruit Loops. When you tell him no, he throws a tantrum in the middle of the store, causing everyone to notice. Mad

*sigh* Why, oh why did I install Service Pack 2!
Krang 04-19-2006 02:31 AM
I also noticed that my computer was slower after installing SP2. While there's unfortunately no way to change that, there is a way to disable those annoying alerts. Go to Control Panel > Security Center, and under Resources, select "Change the way Security Center alerts me." From there, uncheck all 3 boxes and select OK. To free up some additional memory, you can go to Start > Run and type in:
services.msc
From there, set the "Security Center" service to Disabled.

Hmm.. that doesn't seem to be much different than how I've had it, if anything it's a little more difficult to use.

It doesn't neccesarily have to be a docklit.. I just want something that isn't on the taskbar. Is there a plain old program out there, that when I run it, it will display a dynamic menu of my choice?
Krang 04-19-2006 10:22 PM
Menu Inventor sounds like what you're looking for. If not, you can look through these search results from SourceForge or these from Download.com.

For the first screenshot, run HijackThis (link is in the first post in this thread), and the hijacker should be listed with the prefix O8. Check the box next to it and click "Fix checked." You also might want to look into using a different browser such as Firefox, SeaMonkey, or Opera, since IE is very prone to being hijacked... For the second screenshot, you can simply right-click the folder and delete it, since it looks like the uninstaller doesn't point anywhere.
