Something might be up with my Norton '06.
If I scan one file, it says "Total files scanned 0", I found this odd, so I scanned a folder with exactly 156 files. Norton reported scanning 11.
Something up?

Alright. So I've been wandering around the web. And hey! I come across some movies.
the movie files are .mkv though, so I couldn't open them. I searched online to see what codecs I needed. I needed to download the Matroska Pack which had the codecs and programs needed.
That file is located here, second set.
http://www.matroska.org/downloads/windows.html
I also needed a media player, I already had Core media player, so I was fine I think. I found now that the mkv files had automaticcaly had Core Media player set as thier primary open app.
But to my surprise the files wouldn't open!
First I get an error pop up window saying,
Header: Haali Media Splitter
Body: First Element in file is not EBML
I then check in Media Core Player Console, and it says "TCMP's Core can not render the file:" then says the directory.
They reccomend another media player,Media Player Classic, I try that one, and I get the same errors. "Invalid first byte of EBML ID: 0D" Then at the bottom it says "Cannot render the file"
Any ideas guys? Anyone else use mkv video files?

I've used Matroska often, and it hasn't given me that error at all.
AIR: The Motion Picture did give me problems, however. With MPlayer, though, I was able to play the mkv movie file perfectly. Have you downloaded the
Full Matroska Pack (With video and audio codecs)? It sounds like you may be missing some video or audio codecs, such as H.264 or XviD. Try that and see if that's the problem. If not, use VLC or MPlayer to view the files.
I hope that helps you. Someone can correct me or add to this if they wish.

Hmmm, I was looking at the codecs. The only one I'm not sure about is Xvid, though I do think I got it at one point. Didn't think I may need it being not using that file type. But. hm.
I'll check it out. Thanks!

You might want to check NAV's options to see if it is only scanning files of certain types. If not, you may need to update your virus definitions or reinstall if the problems continue.

Actually, MKV files are just containers that hold the various parts of the video clip (video, audio, subtitles, etc.), so the video part might still be encoded in XviD.

Hmm, I checked and double checked the settings, ran Live Update, everything seems to be in order........ wish I could give you more info.

Hmm, I guess the only thing left to try is to see if it has the same problem with other folders. If so, there must be something wrong with the installation, so you should probably uninstall it completely, then install it again.

my father wants to set up a thing at his business. he wants to have multiple webcams set around. he wants a central hub computer where he can watch all of them, and also send images from any cam of his choosing to a website.
he wants to be able to view it on a big screen.. that should be easy enough, get a computer w/S-Video out or something similar.
the webcam he seems interested in is
this.
it sounds pretty good. i'm just not quite sure of the software capabilities, so i'm asking for help on figuring this out.
we need a program or tool that can mange multiple cameras at once, and show them on the main computer all at the same time. there needs to be a way to broadcast the webcam to computers anywhere online. i'm thinking some sort of web address. when they go to the address, they're asked for a password. it would be, the password can be changed at any time. so like, a business partner would be given a password to view the camera for 15 min or however long, and then a new password takes place. that way, people can't jsut get into it. they would see whichever cam the main computer selects.
i checked a few programs and for uploading to a page, u need to pay for it, for view on a local network, it's free. i need something where we can just FTP it to a page w/an easily changable password.
any ideas?

I'm not sure if there is software that will do both tasks (view the images and upload them to an FTP server), so you may need two separate programs.
Here is a list of webcam tools, although I'm not sure how many of them are free. You can also try
SourceForge, since all software hosted there is free.
Download.com also has a good number of results for webcam software.
As for the password, if the webcam will be displayed on an Apache server, you can set it up using a .htaccess file. You can run a crontab that will create a random password, store it in a private location (which you can refer to in order to give the password to the business partner), then encrypt it and update the .htaccess file. This may be easier using a scripting language such as PHP or Perl rather than a shell script.

My Norton Anti-Virus 2006 has somewhere along the line became exposed to gamma-rays and is now Norton Hulk '06.
NORTON SMASH!
NORTON SLOOOOW COMPUTER!
NORTON DISABLE PROCESSES!
NORTON FREEZE COMPUTER!
NORTON ATTEMPT TO SCAN FILES THAT ARE DOWNLOADING, SCREWING THEM UP!
Yeah.... heh, all kidding aside, I thought I had fixed the settings on it so it would behave.... I was wrong.
Seeing as it's past the point for an extended download from Norton, how would I go about getting a new installer, because I was stupid and didn't save the previous one.

You could check your temp directory (C:\Documents and Settings\
(your name)\Local Settings\Temp) to see if the installer is still there, but otherwise, there is unfortunately no other way to reinstall it besides buying it again (unless their support team is willing to extend your download if you provide them with the details of your purchase).

Yeah, it isn't. I clear the Temp files.
I'll see if I can dig up the details when I got it, but if not I guess I'll hold the "beast" at bay until I have the cash to buy a new copy.
*grabs taser* Back Norton! Back I say!
I think maybe it's more of a "Nortonstein" then a "Norton Hulk". It was installed with the right intentions, yet it's become a wondering monster, screwing up what normally is a nice computer.

Sorry for the double post.
Is there a way to find out a site's IP range?
I want to permantly block gamespot. I hate when I'm at gamefaq's and it goes to gamespot for reasons I've never, ever understand.

I am not sure about finding out a IP range for a given site, but I can tell you the IP for gamespot.
Its 216.239.113.180
If you want to make sure that this is the correct IP, do the following (This is assuming you are using windows XP):
1. Go to Start>Run
2. Type CMD in the box and click OK
3. Once the "DOS" prompt pops up, type "tracert
www.gamespot.com" (Without the quotes) and wait for it to run through.
4. The last item after it completes should give you the host name and IP.
I hope this helps a little.

Awesome, thanks a lot BigOFan!
Entered that into my IP blocking program, and it did the trick.

this is a problem that appears to be really common online, but there doesn't seem to be any one working solution. i've installed Final Fantasy VII on my computer, and it comes with a MIDI program, Yamaha S-YXG70. but it doesn't work correctly.
when i run the actual Yamaha player, it says that there is no Driver installed, and ends up using the General MIDI the computer has. If I run the Yamaha Configuration Utility, nothing pops up at all. You click the program and it does nothing. If I run any other MIDI program, or go to my Sound settings, no Yamaha thing of any kind appears on any possible list. Yet, if you go to the FFVII configuration utility, you can choose the Yamaha S-YXG70 from the list. it sounds almost exactly the same as General MIDI, with the exception of the percussion. it also starts after a delay.
so i looked around online, and found many with the same problem. no one seemed to have a solution. so i uninstalled S-YXG70, and found S-YXG50 online. there is the exact same problem. and i bet if i was able to get S-YXG100 or whatever, i would still have the same problem.
it's possible that my sound card just isn't capable, but seeing as Yamaha XG came out like 10 years before this computer was built, that seems kind of unlikely. I just want to be able to have a much broader capability with MIDI on my computer, and i've seen other computers w/Yamaha sound insanely realistic.
anything i can do to fix this?
and, one other question; i know my computer's IP on our network, but how do i find out the IP so a computer anywhere else can connect to it?

NVWC2006, I've got the right site for you.
qhimm.com's
forums.
They have taken apart FF VII PC and have made some really cool modifications, and I'm sure they will be able to help you with this problem.
I personally love the battle models to field patch, where the little "SD" models are replaced by the ones you use in battle. Sure it may look a tad odd and there is some clipping, but it's cool what they've done.
Another patch can make FF VII PC use mp3's
instead of midi's. You could use the OST, or any mp3 you want.
I'll check in on their reply to you, but let me know via PM how it goes.

This site will display your public IP. Your ISP may change your IP every once in a while, so if the public IP you specify no longer works, you can visit the site again to view the updated one. It is also useful to view your hostname and user agent if you ever need to know that information as well.
