Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware. The driver may be corrupted or missing. (Code 39)

He's using XP Home, btw

It sounds like uninstallation and reinstallation of SP2 somehow caused the driver versions to conflict. If those drives came with installation disks, try installing the drivers from those. If not, go to Device Manager, right click the drive, and select "Update Driver." Choose "no" for Windows Update, and choose "Advanced" for the next option. At the next prompt, choose "Search for the best driver." Now look at the list of available drivers and select the newest one. If that doesn't work, repeat the process and select the next oldest one and so on.

He tells me it won't comply.

The drivers were messed up due to CleanUp!. I think I've mentioned this before...but whatever.

Aforementioned program did something funny, and knocked out the drives and the windows XP style.

Reinstalling SP2 fixed the style thing, but not the drives.

I finaly got smart and downloaded ad-aware again. This thing came up saying that it was "Windupdate" I want to know what exactly is it and if it's okay to delete permenately. I looked and it seems that it is asosiated with some trojans/worms that are out there....but I just want to make sure....

I would normally suggest trying to use the drivers from the XP installation disc, but without a working CD drive, that is not possible (unless he has an external hard drive so that he can copy the contents of the disc to the hard drive using a different computer). In this case, I think your best bet is to remove SP2 completely, then get the CD/DVD drives and everything else working before attempting to install it again. If that still doesn't work, he may have to reinstall XP.

Yes, that is definitely the name of a trojan and not a system file. I recommend removing it as soon as possible.

Isn't there a file named drivers.cab in... system or system32 that contains the default drivers?

EDIT: Correction. WINDOWS/Driver cache/i386...

Regardless, it contains defaults.

On the installation disc, there is, but it is not usually copied to the hard drive during installation. That reminds me, though, that he could also try looking in the folder called "Driver Cache" under the Windows directory to see if there are any usable drivers in the cab files there.

Edit: I just saw your edit, and apparently, we had the same idea. Laughing

we were reorganizing our basement, and i told me mom how i wished we had extra speakers to get better sound from one of our TVs. my mom responeded, "why not use those speakers we haven't used in years"

we have these two large speakers that i forgot about. the label on them is 'Yorx Grandeur,' they came with this other piece that has the same title on it, that is a small stereo system w/built in tape deck, radio, and phonograph.

my idea right now is to ignore the stereo and hook the speakers straight to the TV. however, i am not sure if there is a problem with this.

the tv is a Zenith B27B40Z. the manual has no information on audio output other than it can do it, and i don't believe there is anything on the back about it's stats w/that.

these are the stats printed on the back of the speakers:

S220K Model
6.5" Woofer
2" Tweeter
Power, 10 Watts
Impedence, 4 Ohms
Cabinet: Simulated

the back of the main stereo hub thing has only the input and output plugs on it labeled.

i don't know much about this.. i understand electric current, resistance, and capacitence to a level, but idon't know if it's a bad idea to hook these speakers directly to the tv. will something go wrong? would they just work perfectly fine? is it only safe if i hook the TV to the stereo thing and then to the speakers? could that be bad too?

They probably won't work, simply because your TV doesn't output a strong enough signal to power speakers on its own.

However, the back of the TV should have a Red+White Audio Output plug thingy, which you can patch over to the back of the Tape deck into an input section, and then play the speakers through the tape deck by placing it on the right setting (which might be pressing record without a tape in).

Whatever you do, you likely won't damage your equipment. But only a few, specific configurations will work.
Green_Bird 03-10-2006 11:57 AM
For some reason "C:\Program Files\Verizon Online\Help Support\SmartBridge\MotiveSB.exe" keeps trying to accsess the internet and no matter what I do it doesn't seem to stop popping up. I want to know what it is (all I got is it has something to do with the DSL) and why is it doing this. I can't take it popping up like this anymore it's annoying!
R.Smith 03-10-2006 01:36 PM
GB, you can remove it using HijackThis!. I had the same problem, but I looked up info on it, and it won't screwup the computer if you remove it. Smile

I tried them alone.. to really hear sound from them, I have to turn the TV volume up like all the way.. but when using my PS2, on normal volume, there is a noticible difference when I enable and disable the speakers. I tried it w/the stereo/tape deck, and when I turn it up, the sound gets fuzzy w/noise, so unless I find a way around it, i'll just leave the speakers hooked directly to the computer.

one thing i was wondering about... is there freeware for download that I can use to recover delete files? I understand the whole deal that it's not really deleted until it's overwritten, and I have some files that, while I don't need them, it'd be useful to have them back.
also, freeware that can write over the deleted files to clean things up would be useful as well.
and if they came together... super-sweet...

Here is a free file recovery utility, and here is a free utility that will securely delete files. You could also try searching SourceForge to find more.

Anyone know of an ASF converter that isn't Boilsoft's?
Krang 03-12-2006 09:55 PM
TMPGEnc can convert WMV files to other formats. This should also work with ASF files unless they are streaming video files. You could also try a version of VirtualDub before they removed Windows Media support.

I set up Adobe Gamma on my computer, and it's in the startup folder and everything, but it doesn't save quite right. the actual adjustment of Gamma always returns to a lower setting, even if I save it. how can i make it keep the gamma setting i want?

edit: i decided to see what else i could do, and found my video card driver settings. i have NVIDEO GeForce4 MX 440. i tried going through the display wizard it had, but it didn't help that much.. if anything it made it worse

really, i just want a nice looking display but it seems sorta hard to get.

edit2: another question. so i hooked the stereo equipment up and stuff. there's a 'Graphic Equalizer' on the main thing, w/switches for the left and right speakers. 100 hz, 10 khz, and 100 khz. you can change the setting from -10 to 10. i have no clue what that means.
i want to get a more bass like sound out of these speakers, and just messing around w/the switches doesn't seem to help.
also, even if i turn the volume up on the stereo thing, i just get nice buzzing noises from the speakers as well as the audio, which isn't nice :-(

I'm not familiar with Adobe Gamma since I don't use Photoshop, but I'll try to help the best I can. First, try updating your video drivers by uninstalling the old ones, rebooting, then installing the new ones. If that doesn't help, see if the troubleshooting tips on this page help. If not, you could always try resetting your monitor's display settings to the defaults.

To get more bass, slide the 10 khz and 100 khz switches to the middle, and slide the 100 hz switch toward the top. For the buzzing, try checking the connections and making sure that they are secure. Also, make sure that there is no other audio equipment nearby that might be causing interference.

the "send error report" one when i go into my pictures and just an "error" with an ok box when i try to upload.

k, i'm trying some stuff around, i'll see how it works. updated video drivers had their own settings, so i've disabled Adobe Gamma, and set it to start up w/things, i'll see how it works on the next restart.

turns out i made a mistake; it's 100 hz, 1 khz, and 10 khz.. no 100 khz. so i tried it w/just the 100 hz at the top. it didn't do much, so i added the 1 khz, and it worked, sort of. if i physically hold the 1 khz up, it's great, but once i let go, it's like no change from being in the middle. that slight millimeter is making a difference, but it requires constant pressure.
all the wires are secure.. i turned off the speakers built in the tv and then turned the volume up, that helped w/the buzzing.
lol, sorta thinking of trying to find something to stick in the switch to constantly push it up all the way... or something

Is that the only folder that gives you errors? You might want to check Windows Update to see if there are any software patches that might end up correcting the problem. Also, try scanning your hard drive by right-clicking it in My Computer, choosing Properties, and selecting the Tools tab.

On every graphic equalizer I've seen, the switches stay in the place that you slide them to, so it sounds like the middle switch might be broken. Finding something to hold the switch in place does sound like the best idea.

Bleck, BS Player(free ver.) now comes with Adware "Save. Now" in the installer for ver. 139.829.

I was having some trouble with my current copy, ver. 137, and checked for an update. After opening the installer and once I got past the BS licence agreement I was then at an agreement screen for SaveNow!, also Norton alerted me to the adware.

Just a tip for those who were planning on upgrading their BS Player programs. Stick with what you've got, unless your willing to buy it.
