ALEXANDER THE GREAT
————————————————————————

Who else is looking forward to Alexander as much as I am?
I think that it looks amazing and I can't wait to see it on Wednesday!

Like Troy, these kinds of epics are just the sort of movies I love!

Although I really enjoyed Troy, the movie wasn't as faithful to the original story as it could have been.
From what I've heard, Alexander promises to be a very historically accurate representation!

Interesting, I will have to check it out if it's very historically focused. And of course, there is Angelina Jolie. Cool
Zopwx2 11-21-2004 02:03 PM
Hmm I will probably end up seeing it.

But as a Persian I'm going to be booing alexander. Big Grin

I heard early reviews saying its a touch boring and uninspired, but I'll have to judge for myself.

Oh and I never trust movies to be historically accurate.

The Discovery Channel is showing some specials about Alexander. Tonight is Battleground -- The Art of War, followed by Becoming Alexander. They look pretty interesting.

Meh, he wasn't Irish either and persians weren't black.

its obvious Oliver Stone doesn't think those details are important.....

I wonder why them's speakin ze English? Modern English wasn't around back then.

Would be a kick to hear them in latin! Big Grin Forget the DVD's Spanish and French translations...BRING ON THE LATIN!!

We actually want to see the movie in Latin Class...but it rated R for violence ~~ So we have to work around that.
Dude Love 11-21-2004 10:53 PM
Er, Evan, it was the Romans that spoke Greek, not the Greeks (well, Hellenists) that spoke Latin. Latin was hardly around at that time! Smile

This looks like an intersting movie. I'll have to see it.

Alexander's heritage was from two countries regarded as barbarians by the Greeks (Macedonia & Epirus) so it's possible that his hair color was blond. It wasn't uncommon with the Greeks, either.

Oliver Stone has wanted to make this film for several years, and it seems he's made it as accurate as possible. Undoubtedly there've been considerations for dramatic, box office, and time purposes, but this will likely be an accurate historical film.

I don't have a problem with the hair color.

Anyway I read this interview with the historical advisor for this movie and pardon my french, but this guy had a huge boner for alexander.

....and me having specified my non-negotiable reward for this advice: a place on horseback in the front ten of every major cavalry charge by Alexander's cavalrymen to be filmed by Oliver on location.

Maybe he just had a thing for Colin Farrell Oh Well

Historical advisors for films are often thanked with cameo shots. Ex: Civil War documentary film maker Ken Burns had a cameo in the movie "Gettysburg."

Hmm, I found this on IMDB, which basically says the same thing but elaborates a little:

quote:
Historical advisor and Oxford University professor Robin Lane Fox doesn't get an on screen credit. His price for giving his advice was to be allowed to take a place at the head of what is one of the largest cavalry charges ever filmed. Professor Robin Lane Fox was used to riding around the English countryside but gladly dressed up as a Macedonean cavalry officer to live his dream of Charging for Alexander.

A radio station here did an interview with Colin Farrel today.

Well they actually did the interview yesterday afternoon but aired it this morning. It was pretty damn funny, he was drunk and the two DJs who interviewed him were giggling like schoolgirls.

[rant] I don't get why girls love Colin Farrel though. He wouldn't bother to learn your name after he was through with you. Seriously, one day he's going to wake up and find little Colin lying on the floor crying, asking for a day off.[/rant]

I just got back from seeing Alexander with my friend; it was such a great movie—I loved it!

All the acting was very well done—Colin Farrell and Angelina Jolie were especially outstanding and exceptional in their roles of Alexander and Olympias! The locations and sets were also amazing—the whole production was wonderful!

Of course, though, that's not to say that there weren't any flaws, but I'm not going to waste time talking about them because they're so insignificant and because I enjoyed this movie so much.

It was such a dramatic, exciting, intense and emotional movie! It truly was an epic in every sense of the term!

I'm going to see it again on Friday with my Mom! ^_^

I saw "Alexander" this morning, and while I have a few complaints about its historical liberties, was impressed nevertheless.
Almasy 11-26-2004 06:54 PM
Well, I just got back from seeing 'Alexander' for my second time, and I enjoyed it just as much, if not more! ^__^

So, I saw Alexander with my boyfriend yesterday. We were both highly disappointed. The blonde hair, the overlygayness (not that being gay is bad, but I just don't remember him being that.....gay). To me, this movie didn't make Alexander The Great that Great at all. They made him into his "dad" Frown a rapist and a drunk

~ I like the anime version of him a lot better, despite it's artful wierdness, Reign the Conquerer made him look like he was supposed to...ya know...Great! ~
