The blonde hair, the overlygayness (not that being gay is bad, but I just don't remember him being that.....gay). To me, this movie didn't make Alexander The Great that Great at all. They made him into his "dad"

It's documented that both Phillip and his son Alexander often drank large quanties of wine, although Phillip was far more excessive.
The argument after Phillip's polygamist wedding is a historical fact. Alexander leapt to the defense of his right to the Macedonian throne when the bride's father insulted him. When the drunken Phillip demanded Alexander apologize and was refused, he came after his son with a sword, but was so drunk he fell down.
Years later, after conquering the Persian Empire, Alexander got into a drunken argument with the Macedonian general Clitus, over Alexander's acceptance of Persian dress and culture. When Clitus shouted that all Alexander owed was because of Phillip, Alexander grabbed a spear and ran Clitus through. Alexander quickly realized what he had done and took the dying man in his arms as he plead to the gods for Clitus' life.
Historically, Alexander was against rape and violence towards women. He wouldn't be intimate with Stateira or Roxanne until they were wed.

Exactly.
In the movie, Alexander doesn't rape anyone! What AT FIRST seems like it is going to be a rape scene turns into the opposite! Alexander never actually forces himself on Roxanne. Both Colin Farrell (Alexander) and Rosario Dawson (Roxanne) have stated this in countless interviews regarding the movie:
uhhuh...still didn't like it |
It was an odd scene, but in retrospect was suberbly filmed. I too, thought Alexander was going to rape Roxanne and that was shocking because he truly loved her as he did Hephaistion. Then he stops and let's Roxanne turn the tables by holding a dagger to his throat. When it seems Roxanne's about to kill Alexander she starts kissing him and they make love. It was Stone's subtle way of showing their marriage was passionate, not political, and that Roxanne was like Olympias...deadly.
What a huge let down Alexander was! The only decent acting in the movie was done by Angelina, mostly because she had the the closest accent and always does her homework for her roles.
But I geuss the bad acting would be expected, afterall the movie was rushed so it could beat out two other Alexander productions.
On the subject of historical accuracy, the movie was fairly accurate.. Except for that jungle battle scene where he still had is horse (should have died of old age by that time) and also the discovery of the "monkey" tribe in asia. I would have also like to see one of the more interesting indian battles where the macedonian army slaughtered their animals and used the stomachs and other such organs to float across a river in the middle of the night and completely surprising the indian army!
That would have been an awesome scene. All in all, the movie was as big a let down as Troy.

I agree somewhat, Kent. I also think Stone was in a rush to complete the film before the other Alexander projects began filming.
Angelina Jolie was perfect as Olympias. I wish they gave Rosario Dawson more screentime. Colin Farrell was believable as Alexander, but most of his dialogue was terrible.
The battle of the Hydaspes was more artistic license than historical fact: Alexander wasn't wounded there; that happened weeks later storming a city, but I've read in various sources that Stone was running out of time and money, and that Bucephalus died of wounds received in the battle, so I'll give Stone a break. Besides, it was a great scene!

this movie made me depressed...

it reminded me...that even really good hyped up movies with good directors...can suck...and i think there are people who agree.
