The Offical Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex/SAC: 2nd Gig Thread!

Well last night definately was a stand alone episode, and a good one at that. Espically getting a peek at the major's past. Funny point: when Mokoto told Batou that he could forceably bring down the criminals and he was excited that he was being given permission to have fun on the job for once. And of course the male superiority sterotype being challenged at the end of the episode and the major beating Batou without even haveing to make psyical contact with him. Priceless.

I actually liked last nights episode. It was obvious by the way it turned out that the people they were chasing were definate small fries, and all she did was scare them straight.

But we did learn some more about the technology in the future, people with money can buy organs and the really wealthy can just go fully mechanical.

...for some reason I knew that the major had been a cyborg since a child, not sure if it was from the show or I read it somewhere.

That texas cyborg in the box was pretty interesting.

Oh and that little remark about switching to a male chasis was pretty funny too.

P.S.

Is 2nd Gig another 26 episode block? Or the next 13 like Big O?

Could it have been The doll reffrence? When she basicly said that when she was little, she crushed the doll because her arm was too powerful? or something like that.

That..... and it turns out I read it off the Adult Swim character descriptions before I started watching the show.

I think a lot of the character's backgrounds are explained in the original Ghost in the Shell movie. I haven't seen it, but am wanting to.

I don't think the movie and series have exact continuity matches, but I think watching both might help explain it better. And maybe I'd have a better appreciation for the series.

That said, these recent "stand alone" episodes have helped develop the characters and setting of their world.

This was a pretty interesting episode. Learned a little more about the Major. Loved the Texan guy in the crappy cyborg "body"... the part was funny. Laughing

Some funny and interesting moments in this ep. I hope that the show continues going in this direction. Might change my opinion of it.

The original GitS movie explains a lot, and also I read the manga, which was helpful. I didn't buy it, but maybe I should have. Very big, high quality, with color pages still in for $24. Hmmm...

If a person only watches the TV series, they could have trouble understanding it all. When you tack in the two movies and the manga, you can get a firmer grasp of the world. I had just seen the 2nd movie, and they used some elements that were seen in the TV series, but combined it with lots of other stuff as well, some of whick I didn't recognize from the first manga. I also got the 2nd edition of the first manga. It's overall size is smaller, but it's a dense book and has a glossary of sorts in the back. It also shows the funny side of Motoko Shocked . Also, there's a definite reason it's wrapped in plastic and sold as 18+, even though the thing in question is only two pages long. Two color pages... Tongue

As for the recent episode, I was a bit worried about that guy's accent, and I laughed when Motoko and Togusa were questioning it too.

EDIT: 250th post. Just shows I read more than I write.

Was it just me or was the Major going commando in that dress today? Sheesh

Anyways it was an ok episode today... wish real chatrooms were like that.

No. I thought she had stockings or pantyhose on. Her legs were yellow compared to her face, wich was a pale white color.

I don't know I kind of liked it. Though I say this now out of being a Matrix fan. THE CONSTUCT! Okay with that over It was kind of odd hearing a guy like that have Joshua Seth's voice. I had to keep telling my self that it was a chat room and since the Major looked diffrent and had her own RSI so to speek (Ahhhh! More Matrix refrences Tongue I'll stop now...I don't know how to discribe it other then that.) so they were probly not as they appeared to be. But it accualy gave a more info on how the laughing man became a pop culture icon of sorts.
Raven 01-09-2005 02:36 AM
lol yeah your right... I just turned it on before and the first thing I saw was that crotch shot. I watched the first 5 minutes again which I missed and it turned out the girl with the glasses was the one with no underwear. Either way it's funny.
Wingnut 01-09-2005 07:29 AM
Well it doesn't matter really, considering it was all virtual. They all could've been going commando for all we know, or butt nekid in the real world, well except for the Major of course as she was driveing at the time and conviently ignoreing Batou talking about something she likely didn't care about anyway.
I wonder what they could learn from that virus block fragment thingie?

you have to remember that the Matrix was "inspired" by the orginal GiTS movie/manga Tongue So it isnt really a Matrix refrence
Ano Hito 01-09-2005 01:35 PM
It was more or less a recap episode, which was fine since my brother was watching with me and it was the first episode he had ever seen.

I know that. That stupid little comment was there because I didn't know what else to call the people's apperances in the Chat room other then RSIs. And before that I used the Constuct to discribe the white room where Major talked to the one guy.

And, Ano....It really didn't seem like a recap really. The only thing that was recaped was I think the news brodcast. I don't remember the other stuff being there like that consert, or that kung-fu movie with the guy in a laughing man mask thing that looked like Jack from Jack in the Box.
Zopwx2 01-09-2005 09:08 PM
Call me a nerd but for an episode where all they did was talk in a chatroom, I thought it was good. I'm just a sucker for generic futuristic stuff.

I needed this laughing man recap becuase I missed the first complex episode.

Anyway they really nailed some of those obsessive internet chat loser stereotypes...... Big Grin
Sharpshooter005 01-09-2005 09:46 PM
Crap..I need to wait until thursday.
Schoolie 01-10-2005 10:41 PM
That was a very . . . . interesting episode.

I guess no matter what you say about this show, you have to admit they try some interesting things - like an episode that consists simply of a virtual chatroom.

I liked hearing VA's like Joshua Seth (Toboe of Wolf's Rain, Dio of Last Exile) and Johnny Yong Bosch (Vash of Trigun, Kiba of WF, Claus of Last Exile, and MANY others).

Anywho, it was an interesting way to explain the "history" of the Laughing Man, who seems to be sort of a mix of cyber hacker, Charles Manson, and the JFK assasination conspiracy. This is definitely a complicated (or at least techno/cyber convoluted) plot, so it was an interesting way of setting it up. I wouldn't think that the rest of this show is committed to the Laughing Man arc, but who knows?

The ending sequence was neat. I wondered if there was a "laughing man" among the chatters. And the fact that Motoko was doing it while driving (and not listennig to Batou) was humorous and indicative the of the character.
BabyGhia 01-12-2005 03:14 PM
This ep basically brought out some new things about the Laughing Man. Interesting to hear all the different theories and some of the history.

Interesting twist having the Major driving while in there.

Very heavy on the dialogue but still, sort of, an interesting episode.
