The Music Information Thread

Travis Bickle 10-27-2004 01:48 AM
Opinionated threads based on bands have been tried and failed (thanks to...well...thanks to yours truly, but others were heavily involved). So, with that said, I've created the Music Information Thread. Instead of creating numerous threads based on...well...specific bands and/or solo artists, members wlll post information on a specific band in this thread without including his or her opinions on it. However, to prevent the flooding of the thread with double and possibly tripple posts, there should be a limit of one post per member after 10 posts from other users.

Let me start:

The Mars Volta
Cedric Zavala - Vocals
Omar Rodriguez-Lopez - Guitar
Jon Theodore - Drums
Juan Alderete - Bass
Isaiah Owens - Keyboards

The Mars Volta is a band that is made out of remaining members of the band At The Drive-In (a group whose music cannot be classified other than some form of rock) and De-Facto. They can only be described as a combination of Alternative Rock, Jazz Fusion, Punk Rock and a very, very small hint of emo. They started out by touring with the Red Hot Chili Peppers, and then toured by themselves and with A Perfect Circle. They have released one EP (Tremulant EP) and one full length cd (De Loused in the Comatorium), in which John Friscante and Flea of RHCP played instruments on. They are currently working on a cd entitled Frances the Mute, which is to be released by the end of the year.

Violet Says 5

Eaon Burnsfury - Drums/Percussion/Vocals
Ethan Spalding - Rapper/Vocals
Kush El Amin - Bass/Vocals
Rollin Westcaht - Guitars/Vocals

Location: District of Columbia

Genre: Rock/Rap

Very few acts come along that can honestly be called “new and original”. Just when you think you have seen and heard it all, something like Violet Says 5 pops out from nowhere shakes every nerve in your body! New styles and twists are what keep music alive, and Violet Says 5 has a new twist, style, and approach for delivering a performance-driven sound that will turn you upside down.

The Beginning: The Southern Rock/Blues band Violet Says blasted onto the fast-track in 1999 as a power group fronted by founding member and drummer/vocalist Eaon Burnsfury. After performing at Woodstock 1999, Violet Says issued one album which topped the Gavin charts with moderate success! Eaon then began the long search for a continued uniqueness that would set VS apart from every other act in the rock arena. The road traveled was a long and tough one, and eventually led to the replacement of the original bass and guitar players and the addition of two fresh and unbiased musicians that had the same goal, which was to find that unique sound and style that no other act had. Good luck would be what most music critics and producers would say, but what was soon to happen has indeed been luck, along with a determination and resolve to turn over every stone until something mind-blowing crawled out. Violet Says 5 was born.... "Violet" is named after women that rule! What Violet Says goes….as she states “The 5th member of the band is YOU and her” the listeners…

The New Band: Throughout his journey, Eaon auditioned musicians and traveled the country looking for that unique musical style that would fit-in well with his syncopated, beat-switching drumming. In 2002, Eaon found the players, much to his surprise, right in his own backyard! The pair included bassist Kush Amir El-Amin, discovered by rapper “Ethan", along with Germantown, Maryland teenage guitar prodigy Rollin Westcaht.

The Full Circle: After months of honing their funk and unique groove, the threesome completed the full circle of experimentation with Southern Funk Rock, Hip Hop Rock. What was next to come shocked everyone’s eyes and ears when Eaon invited local rapper friend "Ethan" to see what he could do.

The Rebirth: When Washington DC Rapper “Ethan Spalding” first heard the VS5 tracks, his reaction was that of astonishment. Throughout his career, which included performances with artists such as Alicia Keys, Busta Rhymes, and Jadakiss, the 24 year-old veteran rapper and winner of more than a dozen local rap contests knew that his search to find his own unique musical groove to rap to was over. Breaking the traditional and standard Rap approach “Ethan” discovered that by adding his stories and lyrics over a fat, badass base of VS5 musical grooves that he found himself smack dab in the middle of the “Rebirth” of his own rap artistry.

The Question: What happens when you throw away the turntables, recorded music, and repetitive bass-driven thumps and put a crazy long-haired rapper in front of three groovin’ cats playing original “Hip Hop Funk” ?

The Answer: Violet Says 5….Bettah grab yo’ behind with both hands suckah, cause we’re bout’ to shake it loose!

Interpol is:
Paul Banks - Vocals, Guitar
Daniel Kessler - Lead Guitar
Carlos Dengler (Carlos D.) - Bass Guitar
Sam Fogarino - Drums

Interpol is most often described as an indie / post-punk band.

Interpol formed in 1998 when guitarist Daniel Kessler met drummer Greg Drudy (now a member of Hot Cross). Later, Kessler convinced Carlos D. to join after they met in his history class. Kessler met singer Paul Banks again on a return trip to Paris (Banks and Kessler were old friends at a French University). In 2000, Greg Drudy left and Sam Fogarino was asked to join. The band knew Sam from his job at a local record store.

Before settling on the name Interpol, they considered the names Las Armas and The French Letters.

They have released two full-length albums (Turn on the Bright Lights in 2002 and Antics in 2004), five EPs ( Fukd I.D. # 3 in 2001, Precipitate EP in 2001, Interpol EP in 2002, The Black EP in 2003, and The Antics Remix EP in 2005),and have released 4 singles from each album.

A new album may be out by late 2006 / early 2007.

Eternal (1999)
Reign Of Light (2004)
Era One (2006)

Samael is a long running Swiss Industrial Metal/Black Metal band formed in 1986. While much of their earlier work had a slow doomy style of vocals, and dealt with typical black metal themes, such as satan, and what have you, their release's since Eternal have had a major change in lyrical theme, begin more about seemingly more positive things. They have a new CD coming out sometime in 2006.

Check em' out.

Great thread CT.

Gaahl - Vocals
Infernus - (Roger Toegs) Guitar, Bass, Drums, Vocals

Under the Sign of Hell-1997
Destroyer - Or About How To Philosophize With the Hammer-1998
Incipit Satan- 2000
Twilight of the Idols (In Conspiracy with Satan)-2003
Ad Majorem Sathanas Gloriam-2006

Formed in 92, in Bergen, Norway by guitarist Infernus, vocalist Hat (Hate in Norwegian), and drummer Goat. They released their first demo in 93' entitled A Sorcery Written In Blood and they also did a split with Burzam. They often experience numerous line up changes and recently trouble with the police. Another interesting note is that they never list any of their lyrics but the standard Black Metal themes of Satan, Grimness, and blastphemy against religion are present. Some have enen gone as far to say they are the most satanic band in the Black Metal scene today.

Sorry about the double post, but this a a very nice thread and I'd hate to see it just die out. Hope more people will post here.

Sheila Nicholls

Genre: Alternative

Artist Bio -

Sheila blocks out most of her childhood. She grew up in Colchester, Essex, England, a town fifty two miles east north east of London where her two brothers still live and her mum runs a pub.

She's been writing songs since she was 14 but didn't really talk about it till she was 24 when she was living in New York and formed a band called "Sheila Nicholls and the Splendid Frock," because it was better than being a nanny. Returning to LA in 97 to record some songs, she has also been organizing and hosting "Chicks In Arms" to promote community of diversity among women performers in Los Angeles. It's a bit like Lilith 'cept boys can play if they wear a dress. Sheila runs her own label, Essexgirl Records, on which her debut album "Brief Strop" was released in November.

Other Info -

Two albums are currently on sale, although they're harder to find nowadays. Is considered to be an underrated artist.
